One Month
Naomi had her one month doctor appointment this afternoon. She's healthy and growing well - she's up to 8 pounds, 5 ounces. We celebrated this milestone by going out for dinner together to Indigo in Hyde Park and taking a brisk, early-autumn walk as a family around the old neighborhood. Naomi slept through most of this, but mom and dad enjoyed the time. I can't believe it's been a month already.
Here's a picture taken this morning after an obviously exhausting walk around the block.
A few other things I appreciated today:
* Air is still free at some gas stations.
* I noticed for the first time this year the smell of the recently fallen leaves.
* Driving with the sunroof open and the radio loud.
* Tony and I saw Garden State, an interesting and well-written movie that reminded me that life is no dress rehearsal.
* This evening was cool - jeans and a sweater cool. That's my favorite.

The Boys Were Back in Town
What a great weekend. Adam and Mike were in town from Boston and DC to meet Naomi and visit with Tony, Calley and me. It's always great to be together again. Guys, here are some photos from the weekend's activities:
Note the excellent Team Chandler shirts - gifts from Adam, Mike and Tony. Cal and Naomi have them, too, personalized and everything. It's my new favorite shirt.
To sum up, Naomi loves her honorary uncles, Mike destroyed us at Monopoly, Adam ran the poker table, none of us are very good at tennis, Tony now likes Indian food, the ribs at Montgomery are as good the 20th time you have them as the first time, Naomi has been spoiled by Tony's new TV and will now only watch plasma screens, Gizmo changes a variety of things, and these guys are the kind of friends someone would be lucky to have only one of in life, and I've got three.

Working for the Weekend
I've been wanting to use a Loverboy song title for one of these entries. Anyway, there's a big independent music festival in Cincinnati this weekend. For those visiting, I was thinking we could head downtown one night and check it out. A friend of mine's band is playing Friday night at the Barrelhouse and there are a few other bands playing there that night that are supposed to be really good. Just an idea. Here's the link.

Nostalgia
I found some old pictures when I was in Ashland last weekend. These Chandlersworth memories brought a smile to my face. Mike, since I didn't find a picture of you with CW in this stash, I've posted another favorite, from when we visited you in Chicago (I think during the same summer of '99).

Bath Time
These pictures are about a week old. As you can see, Naomi wasn't too thrilled with her first bath. More recent attempts (in warmer water) have been more successful. Once she's wrapped up, though, she's happy.

Road Trip
We took our first out-of-town road trip this weekend to visit family in Ashland, to the delight of grandparents and great-grandparents. It's nice that we're close to family. Naomi did well in the car - she slept almost the entire time.

Nerd Alert
As I both 1) am a new father and 2) was an economics major (and continue to think in economic precepts), this article was interesting to me. It may also be interesting to one or two of our regular readers. It's about the demand for human capital, declining birth rates and the classic economic dilemma of the 'free rider' problem.

Daddy's Girl
I just realized we've got pictures of Naomi with lots of people, but not many with her dad (since I've been behind the camera for most of these shots). I'm feeling left out, so here's a "time with dad" collage from last night. Gosh, I look tired (but happy) in these pictures. Click for a larger image.

Playing with Sepia Tones
Here are a few pictures from Naomi's thus-far uncharacteristic period of wakefulness last night (okay, so she's asleep in the last one). Mom and Dad had fun with her, and she slept well for the first time as a result, thank goodness.

A-OK
We took Naomi to her first (one-week) doctor appointment this afternoon. We were happy to hear that everything looks great and that she's really healthy. She's growing quickly, too: she's already gained back the weight she lost during her first few days and then some. The doctor said that this "milestone" typically isn't reached until after two weeks. That's our girl - ahead of the curve already (at least in her daddy's eyes).
I'm in the first week of my four-week sabbatical from work. When I go back, I'll be starting in a new role. I'm so thankful that I've negotiated this time at home with Calley and Naomi. I can't imagine going back to the office yet, and I can't imagine Calley having to take care of everything that needs to get done around here right now by herself. Thanks to being Naomi's sole food source, she's more sleep-deprived than I am, so I'm just trying to be as helpful as I can with other things.
I think the sweetest thing I've experienced in my life so far is holding my little girl and watching her smile while she sleeps. In my book, it doesn't get much better than that. I never would have guessed this two weeks ago, which just goes to show you the type of instantaneous change that happens with the birth of a new life.
Okay, enough rambling. I know it's the pictures that drive the traffic to this site. Here are a couple of shots of some awake time with mom and bath time.
Please drop us a note (click the comments link below) and let us know you've stopped by. More to come.

Naomi's Fan Club
Naomi had more visitors yesterday and today. Cal and I also took her on her first walk around the block this morning.
She does have her eyes closed in many of these pictures (she sleeps a lot so far!) Here are a couple of pictures with her eyes open.
We're still in awe of this new little person. It's very surreal that she's here, and that she's ours. It feels like the hospital might call at any time and want her back.

Visitors
We hung around the house today and Naomi had a few visitors.
From left to right: Grandma Rambo (Cal's mom), Jeff (my brother), my parents, Calley and me with Naomi. We're all smitten.

Home Again, Plus One
Matt here. Just a quick note to let everyone know that we're home. Calley and baby are doing wonderfully, although we're all very tired. We'll post later with lots more details and pictures, but for now, here are the stats:
Naomi Grace
born: 8/31/04 @ 8:59 p.m.
6 pounds, 12 ounces
19.5" long
We're absolutely head-over-heels in love with this little girl.
