The Curve
The above graph is the Rogers adoption curve, also known as the innovation diffusion curve. Basically, the area of the segments of this normal distribution (or "bell curve") represent the proportions of the population that possess certain characteristics, or more specifically, tendencies to adopt new technologies. I was thinking today about how I've always wanted to be an early adopter, but I'm just too frugal (okay, cheap) to keep up in that category. I suppose I'm part of the early majority. Here is an example of where some friends and I fall on the curve for one of my favorite technologies.

I am indeed a proud iPod owner. It is an unbelieveable technology, recommended to music lovers with sizable collections.
Hope everyone had a great New Year. Katherine and I had quite an adventure coming back from VT last night...we got 45mins in and were trying to go over the mountains to pick up the highway. It was hovering around freezing and started to rain. We saw cars further ahead of us sliding and one in a ditch so we pulled over and decided to turn around, too icy. We began but had no control as

*contd*
So we had no control on the ice, going downhill about 3mph, sliding unavoidably toward the guardrail until...WHAM! The rear bumper is toast, but thank goodness for the guardrail, or who knows!
Luckily the car was driveable, and after we caught our breath, we drove 5mph back to KGB's house for an unexpected extra night..

C callin me out hard today!! What about the curve for an all encompassing pocket device that includes an mp3 player??
What I believe is not understood is that I adopted a more sophisticated technology, bypassing the ipod altogether. That said, I still might get one unless they get a 10 GB or higher SD card for 300 or less.

The aspects of the graphic most illustrative of my point were Tony (early adopter) versus me (early-stage pragmatist). Adding Mike as a laggard was just funny, so I had to pick a category that was appropriate. This might be one of the nerdiest strings of comments in a while.

I concur with the nerdy part. But I'll add. Was your assessment of ipod adoption scientifically based? Did you run a controlled survey with a statistically significant and unbiased population to determine adoption dates and thus classify yourself, Tony, and others into the proper adoption brackets. I know you have tons of time to concduct such research, what, with work, wife, baby, and all. . .
