Voyage to Peking

peking.jpg

Apparently, you can go back again (and have the restaurant to yourself).

It's rare, but sometimes things are exactly as you remember them. Take Ashland's own Peking Restaurant, for example. It'd been more than a decade since I'd been there, but this little family-owned spot never lost its place in my heart as the gold standard by which all other Chinese restaurants were measured. Growing up, we ate here (at least) weekly. In retrospect, I realize those visits comprised my first exposures to ethnic foods of any kind. (In Ashland, in the '80s, this was exotic, after all.)

Thankfully, absolutely nothing has changed. Every detail, right down to the hand-written Sunday buffet menu in the window, is exactly the same as it was on my last visit. Sure, the place looks as forlorn as it must have 20 years ago, but the Hot & Sour Soup and Cashew Chicken were just as delicious as I'd remembered.

Come to think of it, it's been rare that we DON'T have Peking to ourselves when we head in there. I'd like to hope that this means that we pick the off times, and that they're slammed during the others hours, but I'm not holding my breath in this town or economy. I'm hoping for the best!

Matt, I have to agree with you. Peking tastes as good as it did a decade ago. I'm still searching Columbus for hot & sour soup as good as Jane makes, but to date, haven't found it.

How funny to see this ~ it seemed that almost every time we flew to Ohio, we ended up here at least once each trip, either with Grams or the Chandlers. Good memories, even from across the country!

Unfortunately, Steve's Xenia counterpart is now a Walgreens. Yes, I said Walgreens. BLECH!

Isn't it absolutely wonderful to realize how many of us love the Ashland Peking!? Stacie's right! Every time we traveled from Colo to Ohio to visit family, at least one dinner at the Peking was essential! Then! ...when I moved back home to Ashland, it was terrific to be able to get to know Jane & to have that luscious hot & sour soup again (& again, & again!). Thanks for the memories!
